The MCSH boys may be without one of their starters in this weekend’s Hyundai Pulaski Challenge Cup championship game this weekend. Assistant coach Tim Shannon said that Zach Bailes will miss the deciding game of the tourney with a severe concussion.

Bailes was originally injured Tuesday night in the Pulaski Hyundai Challenge Cup against North Laurel when he fell awkwardly on his neck and shoulders.

Bailes was taken to the hospital by ambulance. The team found out Thursday night that Bailes’ injury was a grade three concussion, the most severe type.

The MCSH girls soccer team may also be losing a key cog for the rest of the season after a 1-1 tie against Southwestern Thursday night.

According to assistant coach Chris Kehrt, Grant re-injured her knee during Thursday night’s game in the Pulaski Hyundai Challenge Cup and will be out for the rest of the season. Kehrt said Grant was playing with a partial tear in her ACL and that she further injured it when planting and turning on the field.

Soccerforweb9-1-09Head coach David Welsh says his team was just plain beaten by district foe Boyle County Monday night.

“Their high ranking is well-deserved,” Welsh said. “They’re a very, very talented team.”

Boyle took the early lead and Mercer answered back to tie with a goal 15 minutes into the game. Boyle responded with two goals within 2 minutes of each other near half time. The Rebels’ momentum carried into the second half as they shutout the Titans and scored another pair for the 5-1 win.

Mercer is looking forward to its third district game against Marion at home Thursday night.

Mercer girls plays tough, lose in Bardstown 2-0

Mercer pulled off a superlative performance, but Bardstown was better last Thursday night and came away with a 2-0 win.

Head coach Jennifer Grimes described the girls play as incredible, though the Lady Titans couldn’t make good with five shots on goal.

“We played right with them through the entire game, just couldn’t seem to find the net, but shots on goal was 5 Mercer to 15 Bardstown,” Grimes said.

“Several players had their best game of the season thus far.”

Fresh off switching their offensive philosophy, Mercer also gave another goalie a shot patrolling the net. Grimes put in Haley Fox, who had “countless” saves with fingertip efforts that saved several goals.

For more information of the girls’ week, check out this week’s edition of The Harrodsburg Herald.
